Flair Tracker iOS App Setup

[FLAIR_7] The MRMC Tracker app is an iOS application that records camera position and orientation data using the Apple device's camera and inertial sensors (AR Kit). The recorded move can be uploaded directly to a Flair motion control rig to repeat the movement, or imported into a 3D animation package like Maya for visualisation.

Accuracy limitation

The Tracker app uses the Apple device's built-in sensors. Accuracy is limited by the device hardware and requires good lighting to function. For more accurate results, use the MRMC dedicated Tracker hardware.

App Controls

The app has six key controls:

Record/Stop button Start and stop recording
Camera selection button Switch between wide-angle (world) and normal-angle (positional) cameras
Home/Reset button Resets the origin of all output values to 0.0
Field of view slider Adjusts the on-screen lens mask (16:9)
Crosshair toggle Shows or hides the on-screen crosshair
Settings button Device orientation, default filename prefix, autosave options, iCloud location

Camera modes

  • Wide-angle camera (world): Better positional tracking per Apple documentation, but lower frame rate video.
  • Normal camera (positional): More realistic camera view and smoother video; slightly less accurate position tracking (unverified in practice).

Recording a Move

  1. Bring the device to its home position — a consistent reference point (e.g. corner of a table, a C-stand mark, or the rig's camera platform at home).
  2. Press Home/Reset to zero all output values at that position.
  3. Carefully move the device to the desired start position for the move. Do not block the camera during this movement.
  4. Press Record — a small record marker appears in the corner.
  5. Perform the desired camera move.
  6. Press Stop. The recorded data file is shown.
  7. Transfer the file using your preferred method (email, Dropbox, or other apps installed on the device) or save it locally.
  8. Swipe sideways to see the reference video recorded alongside the data, and optionally send or save that too.

Files are autosaved

By default, files are autosaved to a location shown in the Settings menu. If autosave is disabled, you must send or save files before leaving the screen — they will not be retained by the app.

Importing into Flair

Setting offsets

When importing the move into Flair, you must set the XYZ offsets between the tracker home position and the rig's own zero position.

The rig's XYZ zero is normally at the centre of the rotate axis at floor level. At home position, the camera is typically at approximately X = 1 m (distance along rail from rotate centre) and Z = 1 m (height from floor).

Set offsets as follows:

  • Z (height): height of the device off the floor at its home position
  • X (along rails): distance from the rotate centre to the device along the rails
  • Y (side): side offset — left is positive

Enter these in the XYZ offsets in the CGI Import menu.

Quick-start offset method

For a quick test: position the tracker home at the camera platform when the rig is at its home position. Then read the camera XYZ from any carts mode display — those values become your import offsets. Once set, you do not need to set them again.

Smoothing the data

The app records at 60 fps and the raw data is rough. Increase the Granularity value in the import menu to smooth the data:

  • Granularity of 1 = uses every recorded sample (rough)
  • Granularity of 15 = reads 1 value per 15 samples (4 samples per second — much smoother)

Start at 15 and adjust to taste.

Using with Flair Live View

When using the Tracker app with Flair Live View:

  1. Ensure Flair.exe is allowed through Windows Defender Firewall on both Public and Private networks.
  2. If Flair is listed multiple times in the firewall (once per install), allow all instances.

Network Setup Reference

A network setup diagram for Windows (FlairTrackerNetwork-v1.2-Windows.pdf) was shared by MRMC on the forum (2024-09-10, talk.mrmoco.com topic 651). The forum closed when MRMC entered liquidation in May 2026. Contact the Flair Community WhatsApp group if you need a copy — a community member may have it.
