Flair — Motion Control Software

Flair is the software that runs MRMC robotic camera systems. If you operate a Bolt, Milo, Cinebot, or any other MRMC robot, Flair is what you use to program moves, configure axes, set limits, and run shots on set.

It runs on a PC (Windows, Linux, or macOS) and communicates with the robot's controller over a network connection.


A Brief History

Flair was developed by Mark Roberts Motion Control (MRMC), a UK company that built and sold high-end robotic camera systems for film, television, and commercial production from the 1970s onward.

The software has been continuously developed alongside the hardware. Over decades, it accumulated deep functionality — multi-axis programming, timelapse, motion capture export, external trigger integration, CGI data import, and more.

In May 2026, MRMC entered liquidation. The company and its systems are no longer supported by the original manufacturer, but the software and hardware continue to operate in the field. This knowledgebase exists to preserve that community knowledge.


Flair Classic vs Flair 7 — What's the Difference?

There are two distinct software lineages, and both are still actively used in the field.

Flair Classic

Flair Classic refers to versions up to approximately Flair 5.x and 6.x. It is:

  • Windows-only (typically runs on older Windows 7 or Windows 10 PCs)
  • Connected to hardware via a dedicated CS8 controller box
  • Used primarily with older Bolt and Milo systems
  • Still widely deployed — many operators run Classic on long-term hire systems

If your rig has a beige or grey CS8 box in the rack, you are almost certainly running Flair Classic.

Flair 7

Flair 7 is the modern, actively-developed version. It is:

  • Cross-platform — runs on Windows, Linux (Ubuntu), and macOS
  • A ground-up interface rewrite with a modern UI
  • Required for Cinebot Mini, Cinebot Max, and Cinebot Nano (these controllers run Linux and ship with Flair 7)
  • Also compatible with CS8-based systems (Bolt, Milo) if upgraded

Flair 7 introduced a significantly redesigned workspace, improved real-time feedback, and better integration with CGI tools and external trigger systems.

Can I run both?

Yes. Flair Classic and Flair 7 can coexist on the same production — for example, a facility running a Bolt on Classic and a Cinebot on Flair 7. They do not share project files directly, but move data can be exported between them in some configurations.

Some features exist in Classic that have not yet been re-implemented in Flair 7 (and vice versa), so many operators keep both installations available.

The latest Flair 7 release is available from the MRMC download server. As of June 2026, these links are still live — but with MRMC in liquidation, they may go offline. Download and archive your required version now.

Which Version Do I Have?

Open Flair and check the title bar or Help → About. The version number will be displayed there.

  • Version 5.x or 6.x → you are running Flair Classic
  • Version 7.x → you are running Flair 7

If you are unsure whether you should upgrade, check with your rental house or the engineer who set up your system. Upgrading from Classic to Flair 7 on a CS8-based rig requires hardware and configuration work — it is not a simple software install.
