Adding Handheld Feel to a Robotic Move¶
A robotic move is inherently mechanical — perfect acceleration curves, repeatable paths. Getting a handheld or organic feel from a robot requires deliberate effort. This guide covers five methods, ranked by Simon Wakley (Flair Lead Developer) from most to least preferred, plus additional community techniques.
Simon Wakley's Ranked Methods (2026-06-05)¶

1. Add it in Post (Most Preferred)¶
Shoot slightly wider than needed and let post add the handheld shake in compositing. Post can spend as long as needed finessing the effect without the entire crew watching, and can match the organic quality to other handheld shots in the edit.
Techniques in post: - Warped Stabilizer (Premiere/After Effects): Film a short piece of handheld footage longer than your shot. Nest it, apply Warp Stabilizer to the nested layer (not the actual clip), then drop the moco shot above it. The stabilizer extracts and inverts the organic motion. - Simple track-and-offset in Nuke or Resolve.

2. Adjusted PTR Keyframes (Strong Second)¶
Use Adjustment Axes in Adjusted PTR mode, and add keyframes on Pan, Tilt, and Roll. This leaves the original robot move completely intact and is easy to tweak or remove.
Steps:
- Ensure your move is programmed and tested.
- Enable Adjustment Axes in the move.
- Set the adjustment mode to Adjusted PTR.
- Browse through the move and insert keyframes on Pan, Tilt, and Roll adjustment axes at intervals.
- Enter small random-ish values for each — typically ±0.1° to ±0.5° depending on shot.
- Do not forget Roll — handheld movement without roll feels flat and unnatural.

"Add waypoints on just the adjustment axes. You can add keyframes with 'place keys' and type in values. It's pretty time consuming which is why the shoot wider option is good." — Simon Wakley, 2026-06-05
Tips: - Vary the spacing of keyframes — irregular intervals feel more natural. - Keep adjustments subtle — too much gives a nauseating "boat" feeling rather than handheld shake. - Use asymmetric values (not perfectly ±equal) for more realism.
"I had to do a handheld-style multipass shot a while ago and got a decent approximation at shake by randomly adding or removing some tilt, camera rotation, lift at every key frame. 3. Mimic the Adjustment Axes¶
Run the move and live-perform the handheld feel on the Pan, Tilt, and Roll adjustment axes using Mimic. The result is then baked onto the adjustment axis curves, which can be smoothed in Flair's super window.

4. Full Mimic Learn¶
Record the entire move using Mimic mode, physically operating the rig handheld-style during the take.
"Full on mimic learn also works and I've done that too and it works but any sharp movements add the possibility of adding mechanical shake which is less repeatable and can blur the image if high speed." — Simon Wakley, 2026-06-05
Use with caution: Any sharp operator movements can introduce mechanical vibration that blurs the image, and the move will not be perfectly repeatable.
5. Tracker App — Record and Import¶
Use the MRMC Tracker App to record a handheld camera path using the iPhone's LiDAR and IMU sensors, then import the data into Flair.
