Bolt Wing M14 Threads Stripping in Aluminium Over Time

Summary

On a standard Bolt-on-wings rig, the M14 threads in the aluminium wings were found to be failing/stripping over repeated use. No confirmed fix, official torque spec, or MRMC-endorsed repair path was surfaced in this thread — logged here as an open question with the options the community discussed.

Symptoms

  • M14 threads in the aluminium Bolt wings strip or fail with repeated use.
  • Not an isolated one-off — the reporting operator asked whether other regular Bolt-on-wings users see the same wear pattern.

"Question for anyone running the regular Bolt on wings: do your M14 threads in the aluminium wings hold up over time? On our side the threads keep failing. We are about to have them repaired. Idea is to get the load out of the aluminium, either through bolts with a steel backing plate underneath, or solid thread inserts, keeping M14. Bumping up to M16 doesn't convince me, the thread stays in the aluminium and the engagement depth doesn't change. Has anyone dealt with this? Curious whether it's just us, and if anyone has a fix that actually lasts. Also if anyone has the official torque spec for these screws, would love to hear it."

Options raised, none confirmed as a lasting fix in this thread:

  • Steel backing plate under the bolts, to move the load out of the aluminium.
  • Solid thread inserts (e.g. Heli-Coil or similar), keeping the original M14 size.
  • Upsizing to M16 — noted by the reporter as unlikely to help on its own, since the thread would still be cut directly into aluminium at the same engagement depth.

No official MRMC/Multidyne torque spec for these fasteners was found in this thread. If you have a confirmed fix or the official spec, it should be added here.
