WizNet Module Overheating in Direct Sunlight — Network Dropout

Summary

The WizNet networking module used in some MRMC rigs overheats when exposed to direct sunlight on outdoor shoots, causing network dropout. Simon Wakley confirmed this on a desert/outdoor shoot and resolved it by shielding the WizNet with foil and adding cooler packs. The CS8 itself was at 50°C and still operating; the WizNet was the weaker thermal link.

Symptoms

  • Network dropout or connection loss during outdoor shoots in direct sun
  • Issue appears after extended exposure to sunlight (not on power-up)
  • Other components continue operating; issue is localised to the networking module

Fix

[CONFIRMED] Shield WizNet from direct sun + add cooling

  1. Shield the WizNet module with reflective aluminium foil — wrap or position the foil to block direct sunlight from hitting the module
  2. Add cooler packs in the forklift pockets or adjacent to the control box to reduce ambient heat
  3. On extended outdoor shoots in high-sun conditions, shade the entire control station with a tent, umbrella, or scrim

The CS8 ran at 50°C and kept working — the WizNet failed first
