Focus Calibration Bug - Close Focus Reading 150cm Instead of 50cm

Issue ID: LENS-focus-calibration-150cm-bug-multiple-attempts
Affected Equipment: Focus motor, Lens calibration, Flair
Severity: Low
Status: [EXPERIMENTAL] - Workaround reported, cause unknown

Summary

A strange bug can cause lens focus calibration to read the close focus position as 150cm instead of the actual 50cm setting. The issue appears intermittently and resolves itself after multiple calibration attempts.

Symptoms

  • Close focus calibration shows 150cm instead of expected 50cm
  • Affects distance readings during lens calibration process
  • Behavior appears random/intermittent
  • No apparent change in physical lens setup between attempts

Workaround

[EXPERIMENTAL] Multiple Calibration Attempts

Reported solution:

  1. Repeat the lens calibration process multiple times
  2. Perform normal lens calibration procedure
  3. If distance reads incorrectly (e.g., 150cm instead of 50cm), try again
  4. 5 attempts were needed in the reported case
  5. Issue eventually resolves itself

Additional Troubleshooting

Check these potential causes:

  1. Verify distance units:
  2. Ensure you're measuring in the same units (meters vs centimeters)
  3. Check distance offsets in Flair settings

  4. Lens axis travel settings:

  5. Verify minimum travel of the lens axis is set correctly
  6. Apply custom focus setup if using non-standard lens configuration

  7. Focus motor connections:

  8. Check physical connections to focus motor
  9. Verify encoder feedback is functioning properly

Evidence

WhatsApp Discussion (2025-03-04):

Teodor Görtz: "Was some weird bug that made the close focus be 150cm instead of 50cm. After 5 tries calibrating the lens it went away… very strange"

Niko: "Did you adjust the minimum travel of the lens axis? And then applied the custom focus setup. So you are in flair 7?"

Niko: "I never seen that problem, just in case carefully check the distances (offsets) meter or centimeter"

Investigation Needed

This appears to be an unreported bug that should be documented:

  • Flair version: Unknown (likely Flair 7 based on context)
  • Reproduction steps: Not clearly defined
  • Root cause: Unknown
  • Frequency: Appears rare

Recommendation: Report this issue to MRMC Support if encountered, including: - Exact Flair version - Lens type and focus motor setup - Steps to reproduce the behavior - Screenshots of incorrect calibration values

Equipment Details

  • Primary: Focus motor systems
  • Software: Flair 7 (suspected)
  • Affected: Lens calibration system
  • Hardware: Any focus motor setup with distance feedback
