Cinebot Tilta / Nucleus Lens Motor Not Connecting — Focus or Zoom Unresponsive

Summary

Focus or zoom Tilta Nucleus-M or Nucleus motor won't connect to Flair on Cinebot rigs after power-up. Most often caused by wrong Motor Number setting (Focus must be Motor 3, Zoom Motor 2), single-motor connection without daisy-chain, or failure to fully power-cycle the whole rig. After a total shutdown and restart of both the robot and the Flair PC, motors usually connect. A hot-plug fix was added in late 2026 builds.


Symptoms

  • Focus or zoom axis shows as grey and drops off after a few seconds
  • Flair doesn't recognise the focus motor even though the Tilta hand unit controls it
  • Focus motor clicks repeatedly on startup, light flashing — zoom powers up after a few seconds but focus stays unresponsive
  • After power cycling, one motor connects (e.g. zoom) but the other (focus) does not
  • Repeated Node 1 reloads don't help
  • Motor works on hand unit but Flair axis stays inactive

Most Common Fix: Check Motor Number

The single most common cause is the Tilta motor number not matching the Flair axis assignment.

  • In Flair: Setups → Axis Setup → Focus axis → confirm Motor Type is Lens Focus (Tilta Motor 3)
  • On the motor body: check the display — it must show Motor No. 3 for Focus (changed via motor MENU button)
  • Ports 5–8 on Node 1 are virtual (the QuadBox only has 4 physical ports) — the port number in Flair just needs to not clash with other axes; Node 1 Port 1 is typically reserved for Track
  • Important: Motor Type must be set to Lens Focus (Zoom or Iris) — not a generic motor type

Focus Motor Clicks / Only Starts When Daisy-Chained With Zoom

If the focus motor clicks repeatedly at startup and only powers up when the zoom motor is also connected:

  1. Check the Lemo connector on the grey motor cable for loose or pulled wires
  2. Check the motor firmware version — must match the other motors provided with the kit
  3. Set the motor's Wi-Fi channel to H13 (or whichever channel your other motors use)
  4. Confirm Motor No. is set to 3 on the motor body
  5. Swap the focus and zoom cable positions to isolate whether it's the cable or the motor
  6. Workaround: daisy-chain both motors together — if only the focus motor is connected it may not power up, but with zoom daisy-chained both start normally; use this as a field fix while arranging a proper repair

Daisy-chain workaround (2024-05-27)

Mattm (Cinebot Mini on track): focus motor clicked indefinitely, zoom powered up after a few seconds. Timothy Heys Cerchio: "Try extending the power/control cable from Zoom to Focus instead of the other way round since Zoom does actually seem to eventually switch on." Resolution: both motors start if daisy-chained together; issue is likely a damaged motor cable Lemo connector.


Focus / Zoom Won't Connect After Power Cycle (Nano, Max)

Intermittent failure to reconnect after a power cycle — motors were working, then after a full shutdown they refuse to start:

  1. Full shutdown — power off the robot AND the Flair PC completely, wait 30 seconds, restart both from cold
  2. Reload Node 1 after Flair starts: Setups → Network Setup → Node 1 → Reload
  3. Check the flair.ini has the correct number of network boards loaded — if it loads fewer than expected, the lens motors won't be found
  4. With the very latest Flair 7 builds (mid-2026 and later), motors can be hot-plugged — power on the motor after Flair is running, move it slightly, and it should connect; older builds require cold start in the right order
  5. Confirm Axis Setup is correct — Motor Type must be Lens Focus (Zoom or Iris) for Tilta; check Motor No. matches motor body display

"Cinebot Nano users. I have had issues getting my focus and zoom to work reliably. Has anyone else had issue with it not connecting at all and then suddenly works fine? I am loading the board and I have the motors set correctly in the axis setups and they do work sometimes, but occasionally after a power cycle they refuse to connect." Trevor Morrison (Cinebot Max): "Yes I had this happen yesterday. Zoom motor was fine but couldn't revive focus motor until total shutdown and restart." Simon: "With the very latest update you can hot plug the motors and after turning on and moving they seem to connect properly."


Cinebot Nano — Nucleus (Not Tilta) Motors Not Recognised on First Boot

The Cinebot Nano uses Tilta Nucleus-M motors (same family but confirmed at setup). On first boot:

  1. Verify the motor's Nucleus M hand unit works (confirms motor is powered and not faulty)
  2. Check the cable goes into the ext. 2 port (Niko's tip from May 2026)
  3. Check Setups → Axis Setup → confirm Motor Type is Lens Focus for the correct Motor No.
  4. Ports on the QuadBox: Node 1 Ports 5–8 are commonly used for lens motors (avoid Port 1 = Track)
  5. Do a full Flair PC restart with everything connected before Flair launches — Flair detects motors at startup
  6. If hand unit and manual control works but Flair still shows nothing: check flair.ini for correct board count; check Node 1 is not loading fewer boards than expected

Flair Isn't Reading Focus But Wireless Hand Unit Works

The hand unit (Tilta or Nucleus) communicates with the motor over its own wireless channel — separate from the Flair network. This means a motor can respond to the hand unit even when Flair has not established a network connection.

Fix: Confirm network connection is working (ping test if needed), reload Node 1, check axis setup Motor Type and Motor No. as above.

Startup Sequence

Boot order matters. Always start the robot first, wait for it to be fully ready, then launch Flair. If Flair is already running when the motors power up, they may not be detected on older builds (pre mid-2026).

[27/5/2024, 7:58:29 pm] ~ Mattm: We are experiencing issues with our Cinebot Mini on track, more specifically the Tilta lens motors which aren't starting correctly. When connecting the lemo 9pin cable the focus motor repeatedly creates a clicking sound with the light flashing repeatedly as well. The focus motor does this indefinitely and the zoom motor powers up after a few seconds of this.

[27/5/2024, 8:04:33 pm] Timothy Heys Cerchio: For a different Tilta Motor (not provided by MRMC) you should: first check it has the same firmware. Change the Wi-Fi channel to H13 (or as is on your other motors). Change the motor No to 3 for Focus.

[27/5/2024, 8:54:34 pm] ~ Mattm: For now the motors start up and are running but only if both motors are daisy-chained together. If I connect only one motor they fail to start up correctly. I will go with this workaround for now.
