Servo Drivers To Flair - Step/Direction Via QuadBox vs EtherCAT¶
Summary¶
For third-party servo-driven model movers, the simplest Flair integration may be step and direction from a QuadBox into the servo driver's pulse input. EtherCAT can be more powerful because it may preserve feedback, but it is not just plug-and-play: the drives must be compatible, properly chained, and known to work with Flair / the required EtherCAT master setup. In the Panasonic Minas example, Simon said step/direction is simpler but less powerful because there is no feedback if the axis trips.
Symptoms / Questions¶
- Operator has Panasonic Minas servo drivers and wants to use a third-party moco crane as a model mover or light mover.
- Motors jog correctly from Panasonic software, but Flair cannot ping the existing EtherCAT board.
- Operator asks for a more elegant way than
step and direction from the X4 connectors on the servo drivers to a quad box. - Servo drive looks like EtherCAT but does not have the expected daisy-chain RJ45 ports.
- Operator asks whether to buy a different EtherCAT board.
Settings Location¶
| Task | Location |
|---|---|
| Step/direction output from Flair | QuadBox / OctoBox / UltiBox stepper-style output and correctly wired cables |
| Servo drive pulse input | Servo driver connector such as Panasonic Minas X4 pulse / direction inputs |
| EtherCAT drive integration | MRMC / Flair-supported EtherCAT configuration, drive chain, and support validation |
| Axis scaling | Setups -> Axis Setup in real-world units |
Community Solutions¶
[LIKELY] Use Step/Direction When You Need The Simple Path¶
Step/direction into a compatible servo driver is simpler to integrate than trying to make unknown EtherCAT hardware work directly with Flair. The tradeoff is that Flair may not receive servo feedback or know if the axis trips.

[NEEDS CONFIRMATION] EtherCAT May Work, But It Must Be Tested With MRMC / Flair¶
The drives may look like EtherCAT, but Flair compatibility is not guaranteed. Simon advised making sure it works before buying expensive EtherCAT hardware, and noted it is not simply a matter of plugging it in.

[LIKELY] Daisy-Chain Matters For EtherCAT¶
If EtherCAT is used, the drives normally need to be daisy-chained so Flair can talk through the chain. A drive with no EtherCAT out may limit the chain.

- 2025-08-27 09:21 - Buddy Bleckley: I got a Seeder moco crane for really cheap recently, their software is terrible, and I plan on using it as a model mover or light mover.
- 2025-08-27 09:21 - Buddy Bleckley: It has Panasonic Minas servo drivers in it, and I can get all my motors to jog from the Panasonic software.
- 2025-08-27 09:21 - Buddy Bleckley: is there a more elegant way to to get it to work with flair beyond a step and direction from the X4 connectors on the servo drivers to a quad box?
- 2025-08-27 09:51 - Simon Wakley: Otherwise Step and Direction is simpler but less powerful (No feedback if you trip it).
- 2025-08-27 10:17 - Simon Wakley: We should make sure it works with ours first as they are not cheap.
