Tracker App — QR Code Target Lock and USDZ AR Scene Export

Summary

The MRMC Tracker App includes two features beyond basic move recording: QR code target locking (to lock the camera or a target object position in space using a QR code marker on set) and USDZ AR scene export (to export the programmed robot move as an animated AR scene viewable on iOS devices). Ben Myers used both features at a shoot in December 2023 and described them as production-proven, with the USDZ export particularly useful for tech visualisation — dropping an animated 3D robot on set for clients to see the programmed move.

[RESOLVED] QR Code Target Lock

Community — Ben Myers — December 2023

Ben Myers: "The tracker app QR codes for locking onto the target is brilliant. Client is loving the handheld feel and the ease of programming!"

The QR code feature allows the Tracker App to use the iPhone/iPad's camera to lock onto a physical QR code marker placed on the subject, set, or a specific point in space. This establishes a spatial anchor so that the recorded move is relative to that physical target — useful for:

  • Locking a target position even after moving the phone between takes.
  • Setting up Target Tracking moves that reference a real-world marker.
  • Allowing repeatable zeroing to a consistent physical reference point.

[RESOLVED] USDZ AR Scene Export for Tech Visualisation

Community — Ben Myers — December 2023

Ben Myers: "And the .usdz 3D scene export is wildddd. Had an AR animated rig that I dropped on set. Everyone lost their minds haha. I can't send any videos or pictures yet but I'll share some soon. Planning to use this for tech viz in the future."

The Tracker App can export the programmed move as a USDZ file — Apple's AR/3D format — which can be opened on any iOS device using AR Quick Look. This produces an animated 3D model of the robot executing the programmed move, which can be:

  • Placed in augmented reality on the actual set for client previz.
  • Used in tech prep meetings to show directors and DPs exactly what the robot will do.
  • Shared with post-production for visual reference.

[INFORMATIONAL] Earlier Flair Forum Context (USDZ)

Community — Villa — January 2021

Prior to this feature being in the Tracker App, community members discussed USDZ as a 3D exchange format: "I haven't tried by myself yet but it's a USDZ file so you have to create a new 3D scene." The Tracker App's USDZ export makes this accessible without any third-party conversion workflow.

[INFORMATIONAL] Connecting the App — QR Code vs IP Entry

Community — Morgan Lal — April 2023

Morgan Lal: "We're trying to connect our Flair to the MRMC app but we're unsure how exactly to do it. Do we just need to scan the QR code or do we need to add the IP and Node information?"

The QR code for connecting the app to Flair (scanning a QR from Flair's screen) is separate from the target-locking QR code feature. The connection QR code is in Flair's Live Tracker connection panel — scanning it enters the IP and node information automatically. Once connected, the target-lock QR code feature is used within a move.
