Reversing Zoom Motor Causes Error / Track Over-Under Positioned

Summary

If reversing a zoom motor causes an error and the track becomes over/under-positioned or refuses to move, first check whether the lens calibration actually completed and whether the imported lens profile carried stale or incomplete setup. In the chat case, an imported lens profile had not finished calibration even though it came from a job done immediately before.

Symptoms

  • Operator reverses zoom motor.
  • Flair reports an error.
  • Track becomes over-positioned / under-positioned in the move.
  • Track may stop moving until restart.
  • Lens profile was imported from another job.

Community Guidance

[LIKELY] Finish/rebuild lens calibration before trusting imported lens data

2023-02-03 — Rene

  1. Open Setups -> Lens Setup -> Zoom calibration and confirm zoom calibration has completed.
  2. Do not assume an imported lens profile is valid just because it came from a recent job.
  3. Rebuild or finish the lens calibration from scratch if any calibration state is incomplete.
  4. After reversing direction, open Setups -> Axis Setup, select the Zoom axis, and re-check min/max limits and saved zoom positions.
  5. Restart/reload if the track has entered an over/under-positioned state, then validate the move before running at speed.

WhatsApp Excerpts

[3/2/2023, 9:57:32 pm] ~ Rene: But reversing the motor causes an error that leads to the track being over / under positioned in the move? Restarted and tried again because the track would not move anymore, but same error again

[3/2/2023, 10:00:39 pm] ~ Felix Roth: It’s more because wie need 4K on our production monitor and need to feed a signal from there to the decklink. Downconversion from the monitor is not possible. So buying a 6g sdi to hd sdi or switching the card of the flair pc.

[3/2/2023, 10:41:16 pm] Timothy Heys Cerchio: Blackmagic converter between monitor and Flair?

[3/2/2023, 10:49:38 pm] ~ Felix Roth: Yes that would be the other way. We‘re not yet decided what’s more useful / having even more wires hanging on the setup 😄

[4/2/2023, 12:15:07 am] Timothy Heys Cerchio: I can understand that 😉

[7/2/2023, 9:40:15 am] Ben Myers: So I’ve been trying to play with the simul8 plugin but every time I import any of the rigs, they appear like this. I’m on Maya 2020.4 (Windows) and I’ve tried simul8 v1.1.5 and v1.1.6. I’ve tried many fresh installs and PC restarts.

[7/2/2023, 9:41:51 am] Ben Myers: My end goal is to export this and use it in unreal. I’d love to take the pre-rigged model instead of starting from scratch in Unreal. Hopefully they I can previs moves in Unreal rather than Maya. 🤞🏼if anyone else has started down that journey I’d love to connect!

[7/2/2023, 9:42:58 am] ~ Oscar Molano: Hello Guys can someone confirm the dimension of the modula rig base? Can’t seem to find it on the website

[7/2/2023, 9:43:58 am] ~ marc Debon: Don't remember the exact measurement

[7/2/2023, 9:50:14 am] ~ marc Debon: But arround 75cm

[7/2/2023, 9:50:36 am] ~ marc Debon: And a meter long

[7/2/2023, 9:50:54 am] ~ marc Debon: Because of the track motor
