Probe / Macro Lens Setup Roundup - Problems and Solutions¶
Summary¶
The community has several recurring probe and macro lens setup problems: focus marks do not match Flair, probe lenses ask for a go-to when entering Carts, Carts flips 180 near 1:1, tube length / tilting lens controls are hidden until Camera Mount is used, and long probe setups shake badly unless the camera and lens are rigged very stiffly.
This page is the roundup. Use the related issue pages for the detailed workflows.
Problem / Solution Map¶
| Problem users report | Likely cause | Primary solution |
|---|---|---|
| Laowa 24mm macro probe focus markings do not match Flair | 3-point lens calibration cannot fit the lens curve | Use Lookup Table, Focus Follows Object, or Focus Independent |
| Probe lens asks for a go-to every time Carts control is entered | Lens Moves is still enabled after calibration | Calibrate with Lens Moves on, then switch Lens Moves off |
| DZO X-Tract / Laowa / Pro2be flips 180 in Cartesian mode | Target passes behind nodal point, missing tube length, wrong measurement reference, or 1:1 issue | Use Camera Mount + Tilting Lens + tube length; use Focus Independent inside/to 1:1 |
| Tube Length / End Angle / End Length controls are missing | Operator is in standard lens setup, not Camera Mount | Enable/use Camera Mount, then set sensor nodal and probe geometry |
| Close focus values are interpreted as 10 cm / 6 cm instead of mm | Distance units and decimal entry are misunderstood | Values are in metres; 0.004 is 4 mm and 0.006 is 6 mm |
| Laowa/DZO focus marks seem wrong from sensor plane | Newer probe focus rings measure from probe tip/front, not sensor | Add film-plane-to-tip distance to focus marks, or use the probe/tilting lens workflow |
| Macro/probe move shakes | Long lens leverage, flexible camera cage, arm extended, direction changes, track moves | Use rigid baseplate/cage, lens support, side mount/turntable where useful, smooth graphs, speed/fps tests |
| Periscope/Raptorscope orientation does not match Flair | Real camera body position is not the same as the virtual optical path | Treat sensor as the reflecting point / imagined camera position and measure offsets from that point |
Recommended Starting Workflow¶
- Decide whether this is a normal macro lens, straight probe, angled probe, or periscope/snorkel setup.
- For modern probe lenses, use Camera Mount and the Tilting Lens / Snorkel / Probe style setup where available.
- Enter sensor offsets first, then probe geometry such as Tube Length, End Angle, and End Length.
- Confirm whether focus marks are measured from the sensor plane or the probe tip/front.
- Use Lookup Table or measured real-world distances for focus calibration.
- If working at, through, or inside 1:1, switch focus to Focus Independent.
- Test Carts entry slowly. If it asks for repeated go-tos after calibration, try switching Lens Moves off.
- For physical stability, mount the camera close to the tilt/roll node, support the lens tube, and avoid unnecessary track moves or direction changes.
WhatsApp Threads Rounded Up¶
| Date | Topic | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 2020-05-20 | Laowa 24mm macro probe focus mapping does not fit 3-point calibration | Use Focus Independent / Focus Follows Object; later use Lookup Table for more calibration points |
| 2020-05-25 | Laowa/borescope asks for a go-to when entering Carts | Switch Lens Moves off after proper calibration |
| 2020-12-07 | Skaterscope macro cannot focus to infinity and shakes | Keep it simple, use Focus Independent, measure target distances, expect shake |
| 2021-07-14 | Laowa probe on Bolt Jr+ shakes with Alexa Mini LF | Improve camera cage/baseplate rigidity, use all camera cage screws, reduce clamps, support lens |
| 2021-12-08 | Macro/probe target can pass behind nodal point | Avoid pushing nodal point past target; safer in Locked mode for close targets |
| 2024-04-25 | Laowa 35 / double 35 periscope target tracking setup | Use tube length, tilt angle, camera mount offsets; beware 1:1 flip |
| 2024-07-23 | Probe setup controls missing in Flair 7 | Use Camera Mount to reveal Tube Length / End Angle / End Length |
| 2024-07-25 | Measure Optical and negative offsets confusing on probe lens | Camera Mount is more intuitive; use Focus Follows Object or Independent |
| 2025-10-16 | X-Tract flips 180 entering Cartesian | Camera Mount + Tilting Lens + tube length solved it |
| 2026-02-20 | DZO X-Tract flips if target/focus closer than Z offset | Use Snorkel/Probe/Tilting setup, measure offset to front, Focus Independent near 1:1 |
| 2026-03-28 | Laowa/DZO close focus units and front-measured marks | Values are metres; newer Laowa/DZO marks are from lens tip/front |
| 2026-04-02 | Macro shoot vibration/shake prevention | Avoid probes if possible, use macro lenses near node, side mount + turntable, smooth graphs |
| 2026-04-04 | Stable probe rigging | 90 degree snorkel/end-mounted camera with Flair top-mount logic can be more stable than probe sticking forward |
